The gouge axe is crafted entirely by hand. The eye and body are forged from tool steel, and the cutting edge from silver steel — materials that ensure lasting durability in demanding hewing work.

The axe is primarily designed to shape the bottom of the log groove straight and true after chainsaw work. It is also suitable for finishing corner notches on round logs, artistic wood carving, and any work requiring axe-precision in a curved, hollow form.
